CTFW Part II: David Tlale

In the next segment of mini series we would like to introduce...

David Tlale

Over the five years since he launched his brand, award-winning designer David Tlale has proven that he is indeed a design force with creations that go far beyond expectations.

After winning the Elle New Talent competition and being awarded Best New Designer of the Year by the Sunday Times in 2003, David Tlale has soared to achieve many more accolades. In July 2007, he and three other South African designers were invited to showcase their designs at the Paris Fashion Week, an experience rarely achieved by young designers.

His proud moments of 2008 include designing a showstopper for British supermodel, Jourdan Dunn, which was showcased at Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week and being chosen to be an ambassador for the Change-4-Ever campaign, which aims to alleviate poverty in South Africa.

Both daring and dramatic, David Tlale is a brand that defies convention and a brand that impenitently employs unpredictable use and understanding of fabric, colour and texture.

We love this collection for its dreaminess and its contrasts. You can have your pick of elegant evening gowns (we're particularly smitten with the first number, it would make a perfect wedding dress), eclectic day-wear (note the black sheer mini dress and ruffled skirt), and incredibly bold costume gowns.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to draw attention to the importance of makeup and hair in the creation of a truly unique, memorable look. As vital as the clothing designs themselves are, appropriate styling that genuinely complements the dress is essential. The striking hair neatly balances the large patterns and structures of the costume-like designs, while the softer looks are paired with teased up-dos that are quirky yet classically chic. And of course, the eyes. Isolated, such makeup would look quite ridiculous, but in this collection doesn't seem the least bit out of place.

At Réfèt, we believe that true flair is the result of an effortless combination of sartorialism and all-over styling (accessories, jewelry, hair, makeup, etc.). David Tlale's spring/summer CTFS 2011 collection achieves just that!
