Cape Town Fashion Week Part I: Thula Sindi

We'd like to take the opportunity to debut a few of the designers whose collections at Cape Town Fashion Week (July 13 - 16, 2011) were particularly innovative and inspiring.

Thula Sindi

Thula Sindi started his fashion interest at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg. Sindi then attended the London International School of Fashion, or LISOF, with a degree in fashion design. Sindi’s first appearance on the fashion scene was in 2005, where he convinced his new employers at Vlisco that he should participate in South African Fashion Week (SAFW).

In 2006, Sindi developed his own line that was introduced at SAFW. Since his debut, Sindi has been featured in prestigious and well recognized fashion magazines such as Cosmopolitan, True love, Elle, and O Magazine. Sindi’s inspirations for his fashion designs can be described as the gentle and nostalgic contrast of naivety and excess. For the woman that wants a look that ranges from tailored work wear to elaborate occasional dresses, then Thula Sindi is the designer for you.

We love this collection for its versatility. Billowy, bohemian-style maxi dresses and long skirts (ideal for those stifling summer days) are paired beautifully with structured, brocade-inspired trenches and chiffon blouses that are almost reminiscent of a time gone by in Louis XVI's France. After all, there's no better way to transition to fall than with the perfect layering pieces...

We're also crazy about the variation between office and party looks: bright pencil skirts and boldly patterned trousers, accentuated by nude basics, versus understated yet ultra-sexy dresses for nights on the town. We particularly love the half-hourglass design on the pink dress and the sheer lace patches on the last number. Imaginations will certainly go wild, but you'll never reveal too much...

At Réfèt, we always love fashion that makes a statement but at the same time is practical for everyday use. What better solution is there for true implementation of fashion, art and design than one which is compatible with the humdrum of day-to-day life? In fact, isn't that exactly what we need to spice things up a bit...?
